Frameworks to give you control of data versus “privacy” (he thinks of as “preferences”)

Harken device: driving device measures heart rate in car with goal to prevent drowsy driving.

Peoplekeeper (but spelled complicated way) use to measure how heart rate changes around spcertain people. Also uses journaling. Makes aware of what you are feeling.

Q: Why isn’t the future here already? 

Mike Lee (Fitbit) talked about doing self diagnostics and then having remote physician diagnosis.

Glenn Tullman of Livongo (diabetes) and Ray Bradford (Spruce Health — an Acne diagnostic app)

Q: data and privacy question: 

Will you bring your business to more conditions?

Seeing a bunch of info I don’t know what to do with is not fun. (Giles) How smart are we expecting consumers to be? There are now whole businesses like Accolade focused on helping people navigate healthcare issues. How can consumers navigate the complexity?

Mike Lee: changing behavior is art not science. Your app shouldn’t make people feel bad. Put decision and thoughtfulness in hands of customer.

Glenn Tullman: smiley/frowney face feature.

Bradford: human care coordinator

Can’t get away with just be the technology any more.

Mike Lee: dashboards are useful for diagnostics. Talked about testing they are doing with opt-in coaching with 100% compliance and success rates.

Ray Bradford: doctor as coach. Talked about relationship between clarity on patients-side of next steps and doctor perception of compliance. If steps on device, patients can always see.

Tullman: thinks of healthcare as behaviorial and an information business. His thesis is self-responsibility because of sheer numbers. Individual must make behavior changes.

Specific tactial and practical talk by Dan Pink:

Fear, Shame, Empathy & Other Ways to Change Behvior

Words he won’t use: Disrupt, Disruption, Disruptive, Disruptafarian

Talks about his show on NatGeo called “Crowd Control.”

1. Use fear the right way:

– Negative emotions narrow our scope. That’s very good sometimes. Put blinders on can be useful.. sometimes. So for emergency settings, fear is really useful. Fear in this case helps us. Narrow focus can be helped with fear.

– Would work for 3 more deals before end of month, but not for a new product idea. Positive emotions expand.

2. Questions to change people’s behavior over statements. Questions (often) beat answers.

Questions by their very nature elicit an active response.

People come up with their own intrinsically motivated reasons for disagreeing with people, when the facts are not clearly on your side, don’t do that.

3. When the facts are clearly on your side, persuade with questions.

Two Irrational Questions:

What are you on a scale between 1 and 10?

Why didn’t you pick a lower number?

People look to other people for queues of how to behave.

Get someone to talk to about their own reasons for doing something. #askpink

4. Make time to Rhyme. Rhyming increases processing fluency. If you look at how kids learn to read, lot of rhymes used, as it increases processing fluency.

Haribo’s message rhymes in every language. (Gummy bear makers). “Kids and grown-ups love it love it so–the happy world of Haribo.”

5. Give people an off-ramp. Make it easy for people to do something. Check the box you want them to check.

Three times the take up rate if you make a specific letter. Social psychology lesson.

We always overweight the importance of personality and underweight the context that people are in. Don’t go with first instinct that “he or she is this.”

6. Don’t make things abstract. Put a face on it. Don’t make it abstract, make it concrete.

Parking test: put a picture of a person who is disabled on the disabled parking places. It becomes specific, not generic.

7. Try Stuff. You don’t know what’s going to work.

Conclusion is context counts.

How can you help people show confidence: Interrogative self-talk. So instead of encouraging yourself, you ask yourself a question, “Can you do this, and, if so, how?”

For obesity and diabetes: go for SMALL WINS. Small wins that cascade. And change the environment. So much of what we do is what we always do, because it is there.

Producer and Project Manager — yes, and, Scrum Master!

There’s an old post out in the wild on someone’s untended blog that compares Producers and their mindset to Project Managers and their perceived mindset:

I decided for fun to add in a comparison to Scrum Master, below. And, to make matters worse to be completely in fashion, I translated from the “versus” to the improv-influenced “and,” as in “yes, and.” Don’t shudder; make suggestions below.

Here’s Jon:

I’m always fascinated by the subtle differences between a Producer and a Project Manager. To help distinguish the two, I’ve put together a quick cheat sheet:

Producer: Wanted to be a filmmaker but gave up on that idea after working in film for 6 months getting coffee for a bunch of thankless bastards at 4am, on a lobster boat, getting paid nothing.
Project Manager: Wanted to be a Project Manager after college.

Scrum Master: Woke up from the delusion of thinking they could or should tell everyone else what to do and figured out it is way more fun to help them do it.

Producer: Makes a project schedule when the project starts. Never looks at it again.
Project Manager: Updates the project schedule every day.

Scrum Master: Helps the team understand what their goal post is (the next “down”).

Producer: Spends the whole day walking and talking.
Project Manager: Sits in the office perfecting that Gantt chart.

Scrum Master: Helps cut through obstacles the team is facing.

Producer: Secretly enjoys cracking open Photoshop when the designers aren’t looking.
Project Manager: Does not have Photoshop installed.

Scrum Master: Doesn’t have to keep secrets from the team. If the team needs help, will crack open Photoshop and they love that that happens.

Producer: Knows enough code to be dangerous. But seriously, is lost without Dreamweaver.
Project Manager: Does not code. Or design.

Scrum Master: Most likely was a coder, is a coder, or will be a coder.

Producer: Swears every other word.
Project Manager: Uses words like ‘Mmmhhmm’ and ‘Nnnkaaay?’.

Scrum Master: Giggles with team a lot.

Producer: Goes to SXSW to booze it up with former co-workers.
Project Manager: Studies for the PMI exam.

Scrum Master: Goes to SXSW to participate in an accelerator for a product that the team came up with during off-hours.

Producer: Cozies up to team members to get them to do what they’re supposed to do.
Project Manager: Tells people what they need to do. Calls them to tell them they sent them an email. Pisses them off.

Scrum Master: The team actually wants to do what they’re supposed to do–so just needs to find out what’s in the way of individual team member’s work and help remove any blocks from getting the work done.

Producer: 2 days before the project is due, all hell breaks loose. No sleep for 48 hours. Spends the night making edits in the HTML and writing copy they forgot about.
Project Manager: Completes another credit toward the PMP certification.

Scrum Master: Has prioritized the work so everyone is super-happy throughout the project as they have seen work early on and improvements throughout.

Producer: Comes in at 10:00 AM. Pissed off cause they drank too much last night.
Project Manager: Schedules an 8:30 AM daily meeting.

Scrum Master: At stand-up every day and is fined by the team if late.

Producer: Mac
Project Manager: PC
